Tirzepatide for managing obesity in patients aged 18 years and over

Recommended for initiation, ongoing prescribing and management in primary care in accordance with NICE TA 1026 and NHSE interim commissioning guidance.  Also recommended for initiation, ongoing prescribing and management by locally commissioned Specialist Weight Management Services (SWMS).

Tirzepatide recommended for restricted use for managing overweight and obesity in line with updated NICE TA1026 and in line with NHS England guidance on phased eligibility.  For details on cohorts eligible to access tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) for obesity, see NICE TA1026 and NHSE interim commissioning guidance .  

All patients prescribed tirzepatide by general practice must be referred to the nationally procured "The Healthier You: NHS Behavioural Support for Obesity Prescribing” service  (BSOP) (9-month programme; digital, remote, or face to face). For Hertfordshire, the local BSOP provider is Living Well Taking Control. The referral form, which is available on DXS or Ardens, should be completed and e-mailed to [email protected]. In West Essex the BSOP service is provided by Morelife and referrals should be emailed to [email protected].

Specialist Weight Management Service (SWSM)

 

Local access to GLP-1 receptor agonists in SWMS (Tier 3) in Hertfordshire is commissioned through TBC Healthcare. The focus of these services remains on sustainable intensive lifestyle change. Patients should be advised that even if they meet the NICE criteria, GLP-1s may not be the most clinically appropriate option for them. The clinical teams within the SWMS will determine suitability as part of the patient’s management plan.
