Dear parent/carer
[insert name of infant formula] is currently
prescribed for [patient first name] because they have a cow’s milk
protein allergy (CMPA).
From the age of 1 year, most children will get most of
the nutrients they need from food so, after their first birthday, they do not
need infant formula. A fortified plant based alternative milk (such as a soya
or oat drink) can be part of a healthy, balanced diet for children if they are
unable to tolerate cow’s milk.
As
your child has now reached their first birthday, infant formula is no longer
thought to be needed for them and prescriptions will therefore stop.
Text Box: Stopping infant formula prescription at 1 year does not apply to children who are tube fed or who have the most severe allergies.
If you have concerns that this product should not be stopped for your child, please discuss this with your child’s dietitian, who can contact your GP practice. If your child is not under the care of a dietitian, please speak to your GP practice.
What can your child have instead?
If you have seen a dietitian or other allergy specialist,
they will have advised you if and when it is safe to give cow’s milk. Please
speak to your GP practice if your child is not under the care of a dietitian
and you need more guidance.
Your clinical team have decided that a fortified
non-dairy alternative milk would be appropriate. These are available to buy
from shops and supermarkets.
What should I do now?
Please scan the QR code at the bottom of this letter and
read "Moving
from CMPA formula to fortified non-dairy alternative milk ". If
you need help accessing this leaflet, please contact your GP practice.
If you still have concerns about moving your child
to a fortified non-dairy alternative milk, please contact your dietitian as
soon as possible. You will find the contact details on your child’s last
appointment or clinic letter. If your
child is not under the care of a dietitian, please contact your GP practice.
Yours
sincerely
