HWE APC recommendation:
Acenocoumarol 1mg tablet is recommended for the treatment and prevention of thromboembolic diseases.
The RAG status of this medication is AMBER INITIATION – i.e recommended
for prescribing but only considered suitable for initial prescribing by
specialists in Community, Secondary and Tertiary care (as agreed) with
prescribing (and monitoring, where applicable) continued by GPs. Monitoring and dosing will be carried out either by
secondary care anticoagulation services or by GP/primary care teams where
primary care INR monitoring is available.
The addition of acenocoumarol is approved as an additional oral
anticoagulant option for restricted use in patients who have trialled warfarin
and are allergic or intolerant to it, and for whom DOACs are not suitable.
